Forum/Panel Discussion

Aims and Focus

In Topic Study Group 2 we will examine and discuss contemporary developments in learning and teaching
mathematics at the primary school. We will try to achieve an appropriate balance between theory and practice
and between research and developmental activities. We will also attempt to bring together a blend of research
and practice activities from the different countries represented in our TSG.

 Call for Papers

The Organizing Team of TSG 2 is inviting the submission of papers for presentation and distribution.
Papers may be proposed for the presentation in two different formats:
  • parallel session papers, related to specific topic areas (see below)
  • Poster Presentation
The official language of the conference is English. Papers or Posters for the proceedings must be written
and presented in English.

Deadline for submission

    March 10, 2005
Based on a careful refereeing process, the Organizing Team will decide on whether to accept the paper,
and (if relevant) in what special group the paper is to be presented. Notification of this decision will
be given no later than April 6, 2005.

Submission of Papers

Papers should be submitted electronically at the same time (a copy each) to:

Sub-themes

Specific topic areas may include, but are not confined to, the following:

  * Core mathematics for the primary years
  • Multiplicative thinking
  • Mental arithmetic
  • Learning early algebra
  • Learning early space and figure
  • Learning early measurement
  * New mathematics ideas for the primary years
  • Learning probability and statistics

  • Mathematical modeling

  • Procedural and Conceptual Knowledge in Mathematics

  * Innovative learning und teaching methods for the primary years
  • Problem solving, problem posing, and investigations in the primary mathematics
  • Making connections between mathematical learning and rich contexts
  • Learning mathematics through doing project in the primary school
  * New approach to teaching and learning mathematics in primary school
  • Learning and teaching mathematics with technology in primary school
  • Assessing and monitoring learning in primary mathematics
  • Mathematical communication in primary school

Program

The program for TSG 2 may comprise four parallel sessions according to sub-themes. These sessions will
incorporate the presentation and discussion of a number of papers on developments and trends in learning and
teaching mathematics for primary school.
