Aims and Focus

Review of recent international comparison studies on mathematics achievement such as TIMSS and
PISA has shown that students of East Asian countries tend to perform better than their counterparts
in other countries. This has aroused many interest and questions such as:
  • How did these students excel in their mathematics?

  • How do we assess our students’ mathematics performance in this part of the world?

  • What are the possible contributing factors?

  • What about the classroom instructions, textbooks and other factors?

  • Where are our strengths and weaknesses?

  • What are the alternative assessments that we can employ?

Hence, the topic study group 6 (TSG6) aims to explore the above issues and to provide conference
participants an opportunity to share their views and experiences

Call for Papers

The Topic Study Groups of EARCOME 3 are designed to provide conference participants for a short
presentation of 15 – 20 minutes.  Papers that focus on the following areas or other related to assessment
are cordially invited.  Each paper submitted will be reviewed by the organizing team, and IPC team.
  • Current practices of assessment
  •  Principles and rationale of assessment
  • Alternative/authentic assessment

Deadlines

  • Deadline for paper submission: 10 March 2005
  • Notification of revising paper: 6 April 2005
  • Deadline for full paper submission: 16 May 2005
  • Proceedings on CD: 16 July 2005
Kindly submit the abstract and paper (as attached file) to the chairs of TSG 6
