Call for Contributions to ICMI-EARCOME 3

EARCOME 3 is a forum to reflect on East Asian countries’ experience, issues and insight into the theories and principles behind the facts and phenomena. It is our belief that further international exchange on such a meaningful theme will truly benefit both the East and the West. This is an invitation to researchers, mathematics educators, school teachers and policy makers from East Asian countries and around the globe who would wish to present their papers at the conference.

General Requirements for proposals

Generally all contributions submitted are expected to relate to the conference theme: Foundations and Creativity: Strengths and Weaknesses of Mathematics Education in East Asia.

All proposals will be reviewed. The accepted papers will then be published in the conference proceedings CD version and abstract which will be handed out to participants at the start of the conference.

Proposals are expected to meet the following guidelines:

-   All submissions must be in English, the language of the conference.

-   Their content must be well organized according to precise heading and subheading.

-   Abstract, key words and references should be included.

-   Papers should be written to a length no more than seven A4 pages including title, author’s information, abstract, text, references, appendices, figures, etc.

-   They should be submitted in Word processor software.

-   Use “Times New Roman” fonts, size 12 with single space.

-   Suitable for transcription to A4 size, with text dimensions being 16cm x 24.7 cm (i.e. a 2.5 cm margin on A4 paper).

-   Graphs and tables format should follow the APA style or the format used in “International Statistical Review” (See Notes for Authors at http://www.cbs.nl/isi/isr-authors.htm).

Submissions

The individual participant may contribute to the following three main components of the scientific programme: Topic Study Groups, Symposiums and Poster Exhibition.

The deadline of submission is March 10, 2005 . Papers for Symposiums or Topic Study Groups should be submitted through email attachment directly to the all chairs of the TSG or the Symposium for review. An abstract of poster should be submitted through email attachment to Secretariat <earcome3@math.ecnu.edu.cn>.

To avoid confusion or loss of proposals, please label your electronic attached files as: EARCOME3_<your surname_your given name>_Sym<No>.doc

EARCOME3_<your surname_your given name>_TSG<No>.doc

EARCOME3_<your surname_your given name>_Poster.doc

For example: EARCOME3_John_David_Sym2.doc .

Topic Study Groups & Symposium:

There are six Topic Study Groups and four Symposiums in the conference programme. Based on the conference theme, each TSG and Symposium may have its sub-themes with specific purposes for paper submission and exchange programs.

Limited by time allotted to each session, it may be that only part of papers will be for oral presentation. But all accepted papers will be collected and published in the conference proceedings. Chairs of TSG / Symposium will make final decisions for paper acceptance.

Poster:

Conference participants are encouraged to display their mathematics education initiatives concerning research or practice in the poster exhibition area. Poster presenters should consider using both textual and visual means of presentation in their posters. The conference will provide poster supplies and material on site such as space, pins, tape. Presenters should use a font of larger than 24 points so as to make the posters readable at a distance of 1.5 meters. Information about the size and format of posters will be given when a poster has been accepted.

Acknowledgement of receipt

Acknowledgement of receipt of proposals will be forwarded within ten days of submission. Please contact the Chairs of TSG / Symposium (for paper) or Secretariat (for poster) if acknowledgement of receipt is not received.
