Structure and randomness in II$_1$ factors

Sorin Popa教授是国际著名算子代数专家,1983年从布加勒斯特大学取得数学博士学位,现为美国加州大学洛杉矶分校数学系终身教授。Popa教授在算子代数的多个重要领域均有建树,尤其在测度空间动力系统的II_1型因子刚性理论有开创性贡献。他的重要研究成果发表在《Ann. of Math.》、《Inventiones mathematicae》、《J. Amer. Math. Soc.》、《Acta Mathematica》等国际顶级数学期刊上。由于其杰出的学术成就,Popa教授于2009年获Ostrowski奖,受邀在1990年、2006年国际数学家大会(ICM)上做45分钟报告和大会报告,2012年当选美国数学会首届会士,是公认的领域内领军人物。

A very effective analysis tool to study II$_1$ factors is {\it deformation-rigidity theory}, which exploits the tension between ``soft’’ and ``rigid'' parts of the algebra to unravel its building data.
A technique for simulating relations inside a II$_1$ factor, relative to specific subalgebras, is another useful analysis tool.
Both techniques fit within the fundamental dichotomy {\it structure versus randomness}, which appeared in many areas of mathematics in recent years. I will discuss results and open problems that are representative for this circle of ideas.
